Fish Tank and UK film industry Case Study

The Institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank are:
BBC Films
UK Film Council
Kasander Film Company
The film is funded by the BBC and the UK film council. Who have funded other British films such as; Ill Manors and West is West. BBC films is known to produce around 8 movies per year. They are also  responsible for the development and production slate, strategy and business operations.

Two other independent British Film production companies are BFI who are known to encourage the development of the arts of film, television and the moving image throughout the United Kingdom; they have also produced films such as The Devils . Another British Film production company is Bedlam productions. Bedlam Production is an independent film and television production company based in Soho, London and has been in operation since 2009. Who have produced films such as the award winning The King's Speech

The most successful out of the three would be 'Bedlam Productions' as there first production was The King's Speech which grossed over $400 Million.

The budget of Fish Tank was $3 Million which worldwide made $2.3 Million

5 films made on a budget of less then $5 Million are: Kidulthood ($600,000), ill Manors ($100,000) Paranormal Activity ($15,000), Blair Witch Project ($500,000) & Rocky ($1 Million). The types of movies feasible on this budget are movies made as a movie diary, where the actors are filming each other on purpose. Also urban crime drama movies which do not need a lot of props used, also where the setting is used without any costs.

Ill Manors

Fish tank was funded through BBC films and the UK film council. British films are also funded through national lottery funding where the National lottery funding give the producers money to make their movie if they see a good script.

The target audience for Fish Tank would be 16-25 due to the fact that the movie involves a lot of actors that are themselves 16-25 and the protagonist is also around the age of 16.

The main 3 genres that would be targeted at 16-25 year olds would be Horror, Crime Drama and Comedy. This is due to the fact that most teenagers are after the thrill factor, they also enjoy the slasher kind of movies which is something that excites teenagers, it goes more with this age factor as these kind of genres would not offend the younger generation as much as it would the older generation.

IPC Films is the main distributor of the movie Fish Tank.
The film distributor can play a huge factor in a film's success.
They  control the marketing and circulation of movies in theaters and also home viewing (DVD, pay-per-view, television rights, etc.). Ultimately the film itself is the biggest factor in whether or not a film is successful, but the distribution is nearly as important.
Distributors decide how much the film should be advertised (TV commercials, internet, magazine, posters, trailers, special promos, etc.) - this is crucial for the film because it gets the word out there and gets people interested in it. The distributor usually arranges industry screenings for exhibitors, and uses other marketing techniques that will make the exhibitor believe they will profit financially by showing the film.
They also decide how many theaters in the film will show in and for how long, thus how much money it can be allowed to make during its theatrical run.

The movie Fish Tank was promoted through various film festivals such as The cannes movie festival.
The difference between Fish Tank and a big budget movie could be the way it was promoted, Fish Tank was not promoted through film posters and tv adverts. But a similarity is that the film also came out in the cinemas and on DVD and was also shown around the world.

The trailer of Fish Tank hooked audiences through the way of violence, actors and also through the costumes. The use of the hammer at the beginning could show that their will be violence in the movie. People may also want to see new upcoming British actors so the actors and actresses could also bring in audiences and the costumes; the costumes could bring people in through stereotypes and those who want to know more about the the type of children who live in estates.

4 Film Still Cinematography Analysis

In this film still we see that there is a low angle shot; the low angle shot is showing the facial expressions of the women. It also shows the background of where she is and sets the scene. The facial expressions of the women may suggest that she is scared and may be looking back at something. The low angle shot also shows her superoity to the audience. There is also the effect of monochrome and the low key lighting creates the contrast of dark and light.

In this film still we see that it is a medium shot that shows the romance between the two characters. It could also be a tracking shot where the camera could be laid out on tracks to follow the action. The medium shot allows us to see their body language, clothing and facial expressions. We see that they are embracing which could also connote this to be a romance. As we can see that they are close this could connote their relationship. Both characters also stand out from the background.

In this film still we see the four characters from 'Goodfellas'. We see a medium shot in this still which allows use to see how their body language, Costume and facial expressions are. From their body language we can suggest that they are trying to act superior to the audience. The costume is suits and in those times, the suits would connote you to look like a gangster or someone in a higher class then others. The facial expressions also look angry as they are about to do something or commit a crime.

In this film still we see a close up. The close up allows us to see the facial expressions on Will Smith. There is also a use of high key lighting where the contrast between light and dark is much less pronounced. Also there is a use of filler lights which makes the scene seem more realistic. The close up shows us the facial expressions of Will Smith and it allows us to see that he is surprised. The close up shows us very little background and takes us into the mind of the character. The film makers do this to make us feel comfortable or extremely uncomfortable.

Analysis of cinematography (1940&1980)

Casablanca is a movie that was released in 1942 which is an American romantic movie set in Africa during the early days of the second world war.

The Camera movements within this clip are effective on the audience as we see a close up of the women who is talking to someone else. The close up shows the expressions on the face of the women. The lighting used is high key lighting which makes her stand out more than anyone else. Furthermore the medium shots on the women also allow the audience to see her facial expressions; which suggests what mood she is in.

Moreover the reverse shot on the protagonist while he approaches the pianist lets the audience establish him as a character, as he comes closer to our screen, we are able to see his facial expressions more and also see the type of clothes he is wearing. By seeing his costume we are able to establish him as a high class.

Goodfellas is an 1990 American crime film about gangsters which is the adaptation of the book "Wiseguys'.

In this scene we see a steady cam shot; where the camera is following the protagonist and his girlfriend. The reverse shot shows how he shows her his power and influence on others. The steady cam shot from behind is a Medium shot of the two characters. The camera also pans slowly when he is coming down the stairs and turning left and right.

The medium shot with the steady cam is effective as the audience feels as if they are walking behind the two characters. It also shows connotes how he is showing off his power, by giving out money.

The Key differences...

We see that in the films 'Goodfellas' and 'Casablanca' that they have quite a lot in common, they both use various medium shots to show the facial expressions of the characters. However the difference is that in 'Goodfellas' we see that the clip is shot through a stedicam and there is also panning from one character to the other. Whereas in 'Gooldfellas' we see that the use of panning is also there. Even though both movies look quite different due to the Monochrome in 'Casablanca' we see that Casablanca uses more high key lighting whereas 'Goodfellas' uses more low key lighting
