Ill Manors Trailer Analysis

In the Ill Manors trailer the audience are provided with a lot information. It is essential to provide the audience with a lot of information as the trailer is really short. If the audience aren't satisfied they won't watch the movie. In the Ill Manors, the audience learn about the movie. They learn about the movie's name. The audience are told about the main characters in the movie and about the real names. They are also told about the directors name. This is important. This is because if the audience know about the directors previous work they are more likely to go and watch the movie. The typical codes and conventions used are Pop ups, Voice overs, Edits, Enigma codes, directors and characters are named and release dates.

Trailers are distributed by the company that has helped fund the movie so in this case, we see Revolver Entertainment distribute the trailers. For example, a Hollywood film would have more exposure in terms of the plot and the characters in the film which therefore would be exposed through the distributor.

Ill Manors uses the typical conventions of film trailers in certain ways. Firstly, the trailer for Ill Manors has a voice over introduces enigma codes in terms of the story-line of Ill Manors.

The audience for the movie is teenagers from 18 to 35. This is because the movie includes a lot of inappropriate language and sexual activities. This is because, the film contains a lot of violence, males, sexual content and taking drugs,  which would appeal more to a male audience rather than females. Also, from watching the trailer according to the psycho graphic group I think it would associated with struggler. This is simply because, struggler's seek escape and the trailer clearly shows adults who have been brought up from deprived areas or haven't had a good childhood which has had a impact on them growing up, perhaps lead them to do drugs.
The audience are told about the release date of the movie. This is essential as the audience need to know when is the movie available for the to watch. There is voice-over used in the trailer. This is because the audience need to know what Plan B is telling the audience.

The colours and lighting both also help represent the genre as, they use a lot of dark colours and not many bright lights but they've put a lot of the bright shots in black and white to give it that dull, negative look which again represents the crime drama genre. Finally, the characters themselves all wear a lot of dark colours to blend it and not be so noticeable, the film has a lot of black people fighting and selling drugs which is a dominant representation on how black people are portrayed in the media nowadays but also represents the genre of crime drama.

Types of promotion (Ill Manors Case Study)

In the Ill Manors poster, we see that it is clear what genre it would come under, this is highlighted through the council estates in the background, we also see the gun Riz Ahmed is holding, this is also an action code as it could develop the narrative as the movie progresses, this also makes the genre again clear as we can tell that the movie will also have aspects of action in it. The yellow title engages the audiences attention as we notice the contrast between the title being bright and the background being so dull. The dark council estate foreshadows, how something bad might happen there, it also makes us question what will happen in the estate. It also connotes how people look down at people living in estates, so again that stereotype of how everyone from an estate is unmoral and a criminal. The main difference between this and the other ill manor movie posters is that shows the estate and shows how people look down at the estate rather then the other movie posters we see where Riz Ahmed vomiting on the title. It shows how the estate is making him sick and making him do bad things.

Another comparison is between Plan B in the NME magazine and the website. In both Plan B is shown with other characters, we see on both how Plan B is not the main image. This is effective as we see how Plan B is just the background actor, he's not significant in any way, he's just another guy in the estate but there's so many other stories that we learn about when we watch the movie. Which also show that Plan B is not the main image. In both we also see Plan B hooded up which could also show him as a 'Hoodrat' but this 'Hoodrat' made something of himself and is criticising how other people look at people from the estate. A difference between the two is that we see no genre presented in the NME magazine, we just see Plan B smoking a cigarette looking like an outlaw, we also see how Plan B looks aggressive which could represent his anger at society. On the website we see Plan B on a wall surrounded by graffiti, which again shows him as an outlaw but he's not the main man in this plot.

Also we see how the Album Cover and The website is similar in a way, we see how the word 'ILL' is shown on the front of a wall, like graffiti but Plan B is covering Manors, this could connote how he has lost his 'Manors' and lost belief in moral things. We also see Plan B just on the wall in both, but in both we see the setting of estates, this could make the audience question how will setting be presented in the movie and in the album. The difference between both is that on the website we see other characters too, these characters are more focused on and we do not really see Plan B, he is just a background character while on the other hand on the album cover, Plan B is the protagonist, he is shown as the main character, We know by this that Plan B will be the main guy in the album.

Coursework Brief Notes

You have been given an opportunity to prepare a pitch for development funding and so will need to present sample production work.  The programme will have a target audience similar to E4’s demographic (15–35) and will be suitable for pre-watershed broadcasting.

Produce the opening few scenes of your TV programme establishing narrative themes,
characters and location.  You could include a title sequence and your finished product
should be approximately two minutes long.

 5-6 A4 pages of research and planning material. This could include a
'statement of intent'
 The products created for the two selected tasks:
– Printouts of print work
and/or
– A DVD containing moving image work (playable on a domestic DVD)
and/or
– A disc or pen drive containing an audio file (mp3) if possible
and/or
– A disc or pen drive containing the e-media work (converted to open in a
browser)
and/or
– A URL giving access to moving image and/or audio and/or e-media work
 A 1500 word evaluation
 A bibliography

Media Language/Forms
Students need to make specific media language choices and should be able to show
how these choices influence the meaning/reception of the products being created.
They should use the appropriate media language choices that allow them to emulate
their chosen media form. Knowledge and understanding of this will come from
researching existing products and analysing the conventions used in their
construction. Students would also need to consider genre and demonstrate their
knowledge in selecting appropriate media language.

Audience
All briefs will give some indication of audience. Students should consider how best to
identify their target audience and the creation of products that attract them, appeal to
them and address them appropriately. Some products may be gendered and/or have
a specific age group as the identified target audience. Students can research into
existing products and see how they identify and address their audience group.
They should analyse the products themselves as well as looking at corporate
statements. They should be able to see connections between audiences and the
way real media products are constructed. They should use this understanding to help
make their own production choices.

Productions
Good quality productions will use the knowledge and understanding gained from the
research undertaken to inform the media language choices made in production.
Students should use this knowledge but higher level marks are rewarded where
conventions are not simply replicated but where students also show creativity and
flair in their approach.

Broadcasting Task (i) Opening Scenes/Title Sequence
Students can choose the form of their broadcast – opening scenes with or without a
title sequence. They should replicate codes and conventions, so the form and genre
are recognisable. Creative approaches are to be encouraged.
Research could investigate how themes, characters and locations are identified early
in a broadcast. HBO/Showtime dramas use a range of methods. For example, Game
of Thrones travels across a map of the fantasy world the audience will find
themselves immersed in whilst Dexter uses a montage of familiar domestic images
(cooking breakfast, getting dressed etc.) in extreme close-up, destabilising the
familiar and tying it into the violence of the story-lines to follow.
The production should carefully consider mise-en-scene, lighting, costume and
location as part of the planning process. Students who use a variety of camera shots
in their work tend to make more interesting moving image work. Post production
effects may also be appropriate and use of the camera and editing software allows
marks to be awarded for technical ability. In the evaluation students should be
prepared to talk about the reasoning behind their media language choices. They
should consider the choices in light of the requirements of the brief/task

Character Analysis Research.

One of the characters from our film production will be the foreigner.

This character will be a man, and will fit into our comedic film production. He will be a man who looks just over 18 and will be from India, he will fit into our production due to the fact that he will do stupid things which will make the audience laugh. The reason why our character will appeal to our audience is because he himself will be young, do stupid things which sometimes some people do, in a small way some people may be able to relate to him.

Ill Manors Film Research

Film poster for Ill Manors

The institutions involved in the making of the movie; 'Ill Manor's' were;  Film London Microwave, BBC Films and Aimimage. These institutions are low budget British film industries in terms of making and funding films. BBC films is quite a well known industry who help out and have helped out a lot of people and films in terms of the production funds.

The budget of this movie was :£100,000 and made £453,570 from box office alone. In order for Plan B to raise the funds for post-production, he went on tour in 2010 and 2011 performing "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour". The rights to Ill Manors were sold to Revolver Entertainment in April 2011

Ill manors was funded due to Ben Drew (all known as plan b) going on tour in an attempt to raise enough money to just get the production side of the movie ill manors on its way. The tour was called "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour" which helped fund the film. He also used the money from his short movie: 'Michelle' in 2008, which was funded by himself through the inheritance of his grandfather.

The targeted audience demographic for ill manors would be the 15 - 25 year old due to the fact that some people   can relate to the situations going on in the storyline of the film. Also, it because of the fact that teenagers of this demographic like to watch films which involve a lot of swearing, violence and action along with a good plot therefore appealing to them in this sense.

The main distributor of ill manors is revolver entertainment as the rights to the film were sold to them in April 2011. The film made a total income from box office alone, £453, 570.

The film ill manors was promoted through revolver entertainment as they were given the rights to the film. Also, the film was promoted through posters being put up in many train stations, the music video of ill manors also came out and it appealed to the younger generation. The album was also a part of the movie, so the as the album went on sale, it also promoted the movie ill manors.

Even though the movie is a low budget film it has many similarities to a big budget blockbuster.  Many films use music videos as a method of promotion such as Ill Manors did. One difference might be that the blockbusters use more than one method of promoting them, for example advertising on the television, billboards or the internet. This movie was also low budget. Another difference is the way Plan B raised the money to start filming this movie .

The trailer for ill manors promotes the film and appeals to the age demographic aimed at by this film, the 15 - 25 year old  This is done through the use of a music video as teenagers are more likely to watch music videos therefore getting a point across in a music video is a effective way of communicating to this demographic. It also appeals audiences through the use of the music, It also gives slight background information on some of the characters. It also has props such as drugs and guns, which hooks some audiences to go watch this film.

The trailer for ill manors shows different characters as well as different scenes. This therefore represents the amount of different story lines in the film and the fact that they all link and cross in one way or another. Also the use of different spectacles in the trailer therefore hooks an audience.

The difference between an 18 certificate to a 15 certificate is that a 15 certificate includes such things as strong language, a lot of scene consisting of violence, strong indications of sexual content as well as sexual scenes, discrimination, regular use of drugs and nudity.
A 18 certificate on the other hand is similar but with more of certain topics. It includes such things as extreme strong language and regularity of swear words. A use of sexual language as well as sexual intercourse,  blood and gore and much references to discriminatory language and ethnicities, an 18 certificate will also consist of things which are not deemed moral by society

MEST2: Research and Planning

Tue blood is my first programme, I found it similar to my own idea as it was a programme that had elements of the genre thriller inside it, there was a lot of different settings which helped create the narrative, we also see a lot of gory scenes throughout the beginning two scenes and as our own idea has to be pre watershed, we will have to make sure it is not exactly the same as True Blood, we also see a strong binary opposition between religion and sin, as during the opening sequence we woman praying in the church but straight after that we see someone get killed during the opening sequence, this show would appeal to audiences who are fans of blood and gore and enjoy thrillers.

My second programme is friends, I  saw that this is similar to our idea due to the fact that it has aspects of comedy in it, we also see the genre of a thriller through some of the episodes, as we saw in the last episode, when Ross is trying to find Rachel, a lot enigma codes are created, as the audience is left asking, Is Rachel going to come back ? This is similar to our idea due to the fact that we will create a lot of enigma codes throughout the production. It also appeals to 16-30 year old so even though it was a teen drama it also appeal to people of an older generation.

My third programme dexter,in the very opening sequence we see an various camera movements of a fly being squashed and behind is what we can assume to be the anti-hero grinning. Then we see red typography appear on the screen which could connote blood and violence. The extreme close-ups of the character gives the audience a sense of unease and takes away their sense of security. This would appeal to audiences of individualists aged 25-35 as this particular type of programme is likely to make a younger audience feel uncomfortable. It would not particuallary appeal to our target audience but it still has the aspects of a thriller inside of it and it would still create enigma codes.

I also chose the mentalist as it is heavily based around the crime aspect which is similar to my idea. It uses black and white which could connote a binary opposition,  I chose this as it is heavily based around crime which is similar to my idea. In the opening scene we see that it is in monochrome which could show a binary opposition between good and evil. In the first scene we see what seems to be the hero (props narrative theory) from a low angle shot to connote power walking up stairs into a light. The setting is in a room and creates enigma as to where exactly this place is. The scene then fades. Props such as guns are used in order to give genre clues for the audience. A dolly camera is then used to show a dead body lying in the same room which again raises enigma codes. This programme would appeal to an older audience aged 28-35 due to the complexity of it. Arguably it does have aspects of humour which could appeal to a younger audiences.

Through the opening scenes of The Vampire Diaries  see the  main characters throughout the opening sequence,  The use of actors are not very well known. This gives the effect that their is realism to the TV show as its given the effect of normal people. By having this opening, the audience get to familiarize themselves with the actors that star in the vampire diaries TV show.
lighting is also  low-key. As for example the middle of the shot is bright however the darker it gets towards the corners.  This would appeal to audiences of individualists aged 25-35 as this particular type of programme is likely to make a younger audience feel uncomfortable. It would not particuallary appeal to our target audience but it still has the aspects of a thriller inside of it and it would still create enigma codes.

United 93- Learning Response

WWW: Intelligent analysis of representation.
EBI/LR: More sustained analysis of media language needed
Write two more detailed paragraph for Q1, using Mise en Scene and sound, and the meaning it creates.

The director of United 93 uses many aspects of media language to create an atmosphere, he firstly uses Mise    en Scene to create an atmosphere of realism. From the beginning of the clip we see many various workers wear the uniforms, this creates the atmosphere of realism as we can tell that these men are working, and it is just a typical day at the office for them, by doing their job there is no confusion and at no point in the first few seconds are we thinking that something might happen, we also see the lighting in the scenes is very dark, and the dark scenes could be foreshadowing something bad is about to happen soon. We also see a lot of actors come in during the course of the short clip and it leaves the audience confused as we can not identify who the protagonist is, which creates an atmosphere of realism as we see something different to what we see in normal hollywood movies, there is no protagonist.

Also the sense of realism is also created through sound, throughout the short slip we see various tiny sound clips which create the atmosphere of realism, we hear things such as the phone ringing, and the captain of the airplane talking to the passengers, which creates the sense of realism as at no point during the clip do we think things such as 'the phone may be ringing for comedic aspects' so things such as the phone riniging makes the audience think that it is just everyday life for the workers on that day.

Media Film Production Analysis

WWW: What went well in our short film production was things such as lighting shots and edits. For example, in our short film we including low key lighting, but not using any room lights but we used a phone flash light instead, which was shown at a low angle. This was effective as it focused on the face of an actor during the film, this also created a sense of mystery. We also used dialogue in our production which created engima codes, creating the audience to think about questions of what was going on at times. Also one of the actors pulled out something from their pocket which also created an engima code, as it left the audience thinking, what was pulled out of her pocket? We also cut the scene straight away which leaves the audience thinking and leaves it as a cliff hanger.

EBI: During the filming we made a few scenes faster for a better effect, we focused the camera on the shoes on an actor while he was running, but we later realized that it was not fast enough, the jump cuts also were not smooth so the end of each scene had a tiny bit running over.
