United 93- Learning Response

WWW: Intelligent analysis of representation.
EBI/LR: More sustained analysis of media language needed
Write two more detailed paragraph for Q1, using Mise en Scene and sound, and the meaning it creates.

The director of United 93 uses many aspects of media language to create an atmosphere, he firstly uses Mise    en Scene to create an atmosphere of realism. From the beginning of the clip we see many various workers wear the uniforms, this creates the atmosphere of realism as we can tell that these men are working, and it is just a typical day at the office for them, by doing their job there is no confusion and at no point in the first few seconds are we thinking that something might happen, we also see the lighting in the scenes is very dark, and the dark scenes could be foreshadowing something bad is about to happen soon. We also see a lot of actors come in during the course of the short clip and it leaves the audience confused as we can not identify who the protagonist is, which creates an atmosphere of realism as we see something different to what we see in normal hollywood movies, there is no protagonist.

Also the sense of realism is also created through sound, throughout the short slip we see various tiny sound clips which create the atmosphere of realism, we hear things such as the phone ringing, and the captain of the airplane talking to the passengers, which creates the sense of realism as at no point during the clip do we think things such as 'the phone may be ringing for comedic aspects' so things such as the phone riniging makes the audience think that it is just everyday life for the workers on that day.
