Fish Tank Review

Fish Tank Poster

Fish Tank is a British movie directed and written by Andrea Arnold. The movie is about a 15  year old girl called Mia who is a young lonely girl looking for a break in society, through the movie we see her go through tough times. The girl is let down by various characters who she trusts throughout the movie. Arnold does well to portray the life of a young girl growing up, Arnold known for films such as 'Red Road and 'Wasp' is an Oscar and Bafta winning director. Arnold again goes with a film about a young woman in Fish Tank. The young girl is again portrayed as a girl who has gone through a tough life, she is an isolated young girl who dreams of becoming a dancer.

The main stars of the movie are Katie Jarvis (Mia) and Michael Fassbender (Connor). Mia has been thrown out of school for her bad behaviour, we see that Mia has no friends, she is constantly ignored by her Mother and thought of as a weirdo by those around her. She gets away from the real world by locking herself in a lonely room; where she practises her dancing. Binge drinking and dancing by herself. Katie Jarvis connotes the young binge drinker really well; she shows her angry side and her other emotions well, we also see that she is a good dancer throughout the movie. Not people were familiar with Jarvis due to the fact that she was discovered on a train station but she does well in her movie debut, we see a rising star in Jarvis .
The movie is about Mia and how she goes through tough times. We see that she has been kicked out of school but confides in her dancing until she meets her mums new boyfriend 'Connor' he becomes a father like figure to Mia and he supports her throughout the movie, but that father figure is thrown out the window as soon as Mia and Connor kiss, he then leaves Mia's mother to go back to his real family, when Mia finds out she is angry and kidnaps Connors young daughter. The plot of the movie is quite different to other movies; we see that it is about a short period in her left where she has been let down again. She tries out for dancing but finds out the trails are for strippers not street dancers. She picks up her dignity and walks out, where later she starts getting her life back on track and the film finishes her. Her life is somewhat like a Fish; as Connor says they are easily deceived and as they have not have any experience with a lot of people they are easily fooled; Mia is like a fish in a fish tank and she is also easily fooled, which is what has been done to her by Connor, her mother and various other people who have gone and come into her life. The genre of this movie is drama and it fits the expectations of this genre. We see the life of Mia being thrown around and her life is just like a drama; we do not expect stuff like this to happen to someone but it still does in the movie and Arnold does well to show how this stuff does happen to people in real life.

The soundtrack of this movie is different; we see a lot of contrapuntal music being played, the sound sometimes does not relate to the movie but the music then again is sometimes again parallel as its a dance movie and we see a lot of dance songs being played.

I think the movie would be mostly aimed at the younger generation. Due to the fact some people  may be able to relate to this movie, Arnold has made it in such a way that a lot of young people may be able to say my life is like this, she has made a movie about the difficulties one may face in life but she restores faith by showing that there is good people in society and not everyone is there to take advantage like many people did in the life of Mia. In my opinion, I think Arnold has done well to portray the life of young Mia, she has not had a lot of good luck in life and many people have taken advantages of her but Arnold ends the movie on a positive note and shows that there is a happy ending. I would give the film 8/10
