Analyse of the opening scenes in Kidulthood

The first five minutes of Kidulthood give the audience a negative view of how society see's the youth. The film is opened with modern music throughout the start which begins to fade when the actors begin to speak. At the beginning the two main girls in the first few minutes are shown as scruffy, and disrespectful due to the fact that their ties are undone and both are wearing big gold earrings; therefore stereotypes them as looking as a 'hood-rat' and 'chavy'. The way they both talk also shows the audience on where it is set (London). The school is the only location shown in the first few minutes, with majority of the actors wearing scruffy school uniform.

Also there is a fight in the first 5 minutes which points out the way the characters are, due to this we can tell that the movie is going to be of a violent genre. A lot of close ups are used when the fights are taking place and both fights are shown at the same time. We can tell that the urban film would appeal to a young audience due to the violence, the sexual content at the beginning and also the use of swear words. To conclude we can tell that the director is trying to show the what the youth are like and even though the movie appeals to the youth, it also gives other target audiences an insight on what the youth are like and how they could be different to how society see's them.

  1. WWW: You have used textual analysis to make observations about how the filmmakers have presented teenagers in a negative way.

EBI: I'd like to see you producing even more compelling arguments by using a clearer structure.

LR: Write 3 P.E.A.E.L (point, evidence, analyse, effect on audience, LINK back to the question) paragraphs using 3 pieces of textual evidence that support your argument. Add these as comments below this comment.

  3. The short clip in Kidulthood shows how ‘Kidulthood’ still portrays the black youths as uneducated, prone to crime, and the usual suspect, leading the audience to predict the characteristics of black characters. We see how the black youths are bullies in this and both fights go on at the same time,

Kidulthood reinforces ideology, values and beliefs of today by the society, the society see teenagers as trouble and in Kidulthood the teenagers cause problems, in the clip we see that the ideology is in forced as the kids are fighting, smoking and even the aspect of kids bullying teachers.

We also see that one boy is making something from the machines which raises questions in the future of what he may be making; it could foreshadow that he is making a weapon that could again in force the ideology that all kids are like this and all young black youths are in gangs.
