The Sweeney film poster analysis

'The Sweeney' movie poster is aimed to promote the release of the new Ray Winstone and Ben Drew movie.

Firstly, the sweeny is an adaption of the actual tv show which was made in the 70s,
the use of colours on the advert is a contrast of light blue and white; the use of these colours show the background as the sky and with the dark grey clouds, it connotes that there might be something bad that happens during the movie. Also the colour divide shows a sense of danger. On the other hand the use of the light blue colours may connote that there is going to a rivalry between the charcthers. The use of the lighter colours connote the change of power between two parties.

Also the way Ray Winstone and Ben Drew stand symblolises that they are ready for a war, and the poses also show us that this is going to be an action movie. The guns also give us an insight about what might happen in the film.

The title and the slogan are in the centre of the poster and this emphaises the importance of the title, and appeals to the audience. Also the way Ray Winstone is positioned in front of Ben Drew shows that Winstone is the hero/protaginist during the movie. The use of the weapons and the clothes they are wearing links to the action genre, we can tell that it will involve violence and maybe even gang violence, from the clothes they are wearing we can tell that they are not police officers and they may be disguised as gang members, the slogan "Act like a criminal to catch a criminal" shows use that we will see two sides of the characthers, it also tells us that they are police officers.

To conclude, the characthers are infront of the London skyline so it tells us where the movie will be, the faces of the charcthers tell us that they will me manipluative, also the seriousness also links to the action genre, the shots are medium shots while both Winstone and Drew are in action poses .  This also connotes that the meidum shots are there to relate to the action genre of the movie. . As well as this, there is use of a mise en scene as the clothes worn by the characters link to the genre of action,as they are baggy dark clothes; so it shows the darker side to them.Similarly, the facial expressions shown by the characters connote the idea of the characters being angry, tense and ready for action.

  2. In Todorovs theory; the equilibrium is that both protagonists would win in this war but it is a disequilibrium as there has to be a plot during the movie and for 'peace' to be restored in this context all would have to be balanced out again and the movie would have to end in equilibrium.

In the movie there is bound to be a disruption of this order; this happens in most action movie's and even though each have a different story line, to balance it out 'an attempt to repair damage' must happen. This is the return of restoration of a new equilibrium. These are the expected stages of a narrative according to Todorov. The high key lighting in the movie poster connotes the contrast between light and darkness which presents two sides in the characters, even though both are police officers: the high key lighting can connote the different sides of the officers. It also makes both protagonists look more realistic with the dimly lit scene .

Strauss' theory is binary opposition; This is sets of opposite values, which reveal the structure of media texts so a good example would be good vs evil and we understand the concept of good as being the opposite of evil; so in this situation we can see that the proganists are the good characters and this is shown through their stance and the lighting.Dominant ideology is the set of common values and beliefs shared by most people in a given society, framing how the majority think about a range of topics.
